Singapore, 6 March 2013 – Sphere Exhibits, the events and exhibition arm and a wholly-owned subsidiary of Singapore Press Holdings (SPH), will add “SmartKids Asia”, a children educational and enrichment fair, to its stable of trade and consumer events here in Singapore.

This follows its recent acquisition of several major events and exhibitions from Expomal International, one of Malaysia’s leading exhibition and conference organisers. The projects acquired are the “Malaysian International Food & Beverage Trade Fair” (MIFB); the “Golden Bull Award”, which honours Malaysia’s top performing small and medium enterprises (SMEs); and “Smart Kids”, an education and lifestyle expo targeted at parents of children 3 – 16 years old. The Smart Kids event is currently running in both Singapore and Malaysia.

The inclusion of SmartKids Asia into its Singapore portfolio will enable Sphere Exhibits to further strengthen its position in consumer events catering to children and families. Currently, Sphere Exhibits owns “The Kidz Academy” – a successful five-year child educational event focusing on enriching young minds – and “Baby Baby” – a baby market event which will be held in July for the second consecutive year.

The “Smart Kids” Expo was first started in Malaysia in 2002, and was held in Singapore for the first time last year. This children educational, lifestyle, health and family-focused event engages parents and children through exciting entertainment and programmes. Last year, the inaugural “SmartKids Asia” event held in Singapore attracted 162 exhibitors and more than 93,000 visitors over three days. In Malaysia, the event has attracted over 130,000 visitors annually throughout its 11-year history. The success of the event is reflected in the event clinching a place in the Malaysia Book of Records under categories such as “Malaysia’s Largest Synchronised Virtual Painting” and “Malaysia’s Largest Family Colouring Contest”.

Set up in 2008, Sphere Exhibits has organised and managed more than 22 events and exhibitions in Singapore, attracting more than 750 exhibitors and over 1.5 million visitors annually. This new acquisition is a major milestone for Sphere Exhibits which aims to establish a stronger presence in the Meetings, Incentives, Conventions and Exhibitions (MICE) industry. Its portfolio of trade and consumer events includes “Asian Masters”, “Gourmet Japan”, “Franchise Licensing Asia”, “Singapore Gifts and Premiums Fair”, “BuildTechAsia”, “COMEX”, “IT Show”, “World Food Fair” and “Asia Pacific Food & Beverage Fair”.

Mr Chua Wee Phong, Chairman of Sphere Exhibits, said: “Sphere Exhibits is focused on building our footprints in Singapore and across Asia. This assets acquisition is a timely development following our successful foray into Myanmar. We are optimistic of the potential of MICE events in Asia and this will give us a foothold as we grow our business presence as a key player in Asia’s MICE landscape.”

Ms Elaine Chia, General Manager of Sphere Exhibits said: “We are proud and excited to have Smartkids Asia as part of our event line-up and are committed to strengthen the event further through synergies with SPH's comprehensive range of media platforms and the backing of our dedicated team. We are confident of growing the appeal and interest of SmartKids Asia in Singapore with a vision of building this event across other cities in Asia. With Sphere Exhibits’ core value of quality programming, strong marketing and public relations as drivers, we strongly believe SmartKids Asia will be a market leader.”

Mr Chin William Caffrey, Managing Director of Expomal Singapore Pte Ltd, said: “We are confident that with Sphere Exhibits’ leadership and experience in managing trade and consumer events, SmartKids Asia Singapore will be able to meet the enrichment, health and family bonding needs of the future – our children.”

This year’s “SmartKids Asia” event will be held on 15-17 March at the Singapore Expo Hall 5. Close to 200 exhibitors will be on show offering over 100 enriching and learning activities in academia, health and family bonding. There will be three days of stage performances such as meet-and-greet sessions with cartoon characters; stage activities and workshops for parents and caregivers and trial classes for children to try out interactive games and activities.
The Myanmar Hospitality and Tourism Conference 2013 is positioned as the gateway for property developers, operators and owners of hospitality properties, financiers and investors to explore, evaluate and expand Myanmar’s potential as a travel destination. The Myanmar government shared its tourism master plan, detailing a suite of proposals to boost the tourism sector and showcase the country’s potential projects and investment opportunities to position itself as a major tourist destination in Asia.

There were 300 delegates present at the conference to learn about the opportunities available in Asia’s last frontier, providing the stage for domestic and international hotels and tourism investors to convene and map the future of the Myanmar’s tourism industry. Companies represented include Air Kanbawza, Hotel Ace, CB Bank, Centara International Management, Hilton Worldwide, Keppel Land, Meritus Hotels & Resorts, MasterCard Worldwide, Myanmar Hotels International, Orient Express, Small Luxury Hotels of the World, and Starwood Asia Pacific.

Following the official opening ceremony, the conference started with Dr Paul Rogers, Team Leader of the Myanmar Tourism Master Plan Project, giving a keynote presentation on the country’s developments of its tourism masterplan.

Delegates at this two-day conference also gained first-hand information from the Myanmar Tourism Federation on the hotel investment zones in Myanmar. Ms Daw Cho Cho Win, Deputy Director General of the Myanmar Investment Commission, explained the key laws and regulations governing the hospitality and tourism investments. There was also a destination-focused discussion group to identify different issues and challenges as well as solutions and opportunities that will aid keen investors in entering into Myanmar.

His Excellency U Htay Aung, Union Minister for Hotels and Tourism, Ministry of Hotels and Tourism, said: “With diverse cultures and history, Myanmar definitely has a lot to offer to the international visitors. We have reached a milestone of 1 million visitors in 2012 and expected to attract a further 30% more in the coming year. As of 2012, of the 787 hotels in Myanmar, 23 of them are of five and four stars status. . To meet the demand of increasing tourist arrivals, we are developing and upgrading our infrastructure and tourism facilities.”

U Yan Win, Chairman of the Myanmar Tourism Federation, said: “Myanmar has become one of the “must-go” travel destinations of choice. As such, there is a crucial need for the country to welcome foreign investment to help fill the gap in tourism products and hospitality resources. At this year event, we will unveil appropriate investment and partnership models to foreign investors who can add more financial and technological resources to boost Myanmar’s hospitality and tourism landscape.”

Mr Chua Wee Phong, Chairman of Sphere Conferences, said: “Myanmar is becoming one of the world’s fastest growing destinations and attracted its one millionth visitor in 2012. Comparing with 2011, tourist arrivals have jumped 30% in 2012. From 2009 to 2012, tourism income has almost tripled from US$196 million to US$539 million. With such favourable numbers, it is only natural that Sphere Conferences engages this sector to support Myanmar in fulfilling its potential.
Singapore, 20 April 2012 – Singapore’s premier beer festival Beerfest Asia 2012 returns to offer beer enthusiasts the chance to savour over 350 labels of beers from Asia and the rest of the world.

Jointly organised by Sphere Exhibits, a wholly owned subsidiary of Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) and Beerfest Pte Ltd, the beer festivals organising subsidiary of Timbre Group, this four-day lifestyle and trade festival will be held from 7 to 10 June 2012 at the Marina Promenade (the F1 tracks behind the Singapore flyer).

Beerfest Asia 2012 will feature the most musical tributes in the event’s history since its inception in 2009. The line-up includes two top international tribute bands and Singaporean top bands, who between them will pay tribute to more than ten iconic bands and artists. The performances include Chicago Blues, Funk, Ladies of Rock, Soul, British Blues and Rock. Beer revelers can look forward to great sing-along songs and familiar tunes that promise a memorable experience.

The tribute bands scheduled to perform include the world famous, all-female AC/DC tribute band Hell’s Belles from the United States who remains the only AC/DC tribute band endorsed by Angus Young himself and Australia’s All Star SuperGroup covering hits from Oasis, Dire Straits, David Bowie, Elton John and ZZ Top. In addition, there will also be specific tribute shows of the Blues Brothers, The Beatles and the Rolling Stones.

For the second year running, Comedy Club Asia will showcase A-list international comedy acts from Australia and the United Kingdom. The audience can look forward to stand-up comedy acts by Colin Cole with his tough-talking style that will both shock and amuse; Matt Price, whose trademark interactive style has built a solid reputation on the UK and European comedy circuits and the well-known Jonathan Atherton, popular for his multi-linguistic comedic talents.

The Sons of Singapore, a local comedy trio consisting Jinx Yeo, Fukkah Fuzz and Rishi Budhrani who are arguably three of Singapore’s freshest young comic stars in the making, will be making their debut at Beerfest Asia 2012. Last year, Comedy Club Asia sold more than 3,000 tickets. Each ticket for Comedy Club Asia this year is priced at S$20 at the door.

Beerfest Asia 2012 revelers can also take part in exciting games and tuck into “beer food” such as German gourmet sausages, nachos, meatballs and other great tasting gastro-bar grub from the outdoor food bazaar stall.

There will be more than 50 new beers on show at Beerfest Asia 2012, hailing from powerhouse brands in Belgium, Germany and the United States, as well as emerging brands from Asian countries like Indonesia, Japan, Taiwan and Singapore.
